In 2020, the studios went dark. As an Art Director, I watched the lockdowns arrive and take everything physical with them; the spaces, the equipment, the infrastructure we had all quietly assumed was needed. What we found on the other side was fascinating. Videos were shot at home, with whatever we could reach for. Proposals sketched by hand. Storyboards built without the comfort of a proper desk. What felt lost in structure was exceeded in energy. The constraint didn't diminish the work. It clarified it. It revealed the essential.
When I left, this followed into a different kind of work. International contracts with UN agencies, where teams were distributed across cities and time zones, the briefs were complex, and the stakes were real. Sanitation and Water for All. UNAIDS. The DRC. There was no shared office. No single room where everyone gathered to align. There was intent, a clear structure of responsibility, and people who knew exactly what they were there to do. The work landed. The contracts were renewed. Not because they had to, but because the right ingredients had been identified and nothing else turned out to be necessary.
